I'm glad the solenoids were the culprit. If you'd sold the car to me I just woulda replaced the trans. I'm not big on gambles. Enjoy your new reverseness.

I've tried my luck with polishing plastic lenses. Works for a little while then worse than before. Decided to try replacing plastic lens with glass on stock lights. Purdy straight forward. Warm em up, pry off and clean up, then glue on new glass.

That does look good, but I'm not inclined to go with glass. All of the work vans I've had in the past 10 years have had the sealed-beam headlights, which are glass of course. Never mind that the light they provide is junk. I've had to replace at least one on each van, including the current '13 van (one month after I got it in December '12). Good thing the sealed beam units are easy to replace; as we can see from the pics, the Golf's lights require some time to replace.
There's one way to stop the yellowing on plastic lenses (if you can't park out of the sun): wipe them down with the cheapest, best sunscreen lotion every month or so. Yes! It blocks UV from getting to our skin, so it should keep the headlights nice & clear too.

If you get some of the vinyl headlight covers from ECS I bet the rock chip thing would be greatly decreased.

Re: Tippy MK4 GTI
future reference, we can get the plastic ones looking pretty primo with some wetsanding and buffing, my s4 ones were pretty haggard, and look perfect again.
