My first non euro

Post by SweaterVest » Sep Mon 21, 2015 9:13 pm

I don't know what got into me. I bought something with function over form. Maybe I'm getting old. Maybe I just really did need a truck!
Last Saturday I bought a 91 Toyota pickup. 4x4 extended cab. Factory flat silver with removable clear coat lol.

It has 201k on it. It is currently not drivable. Bought it from the second owner who has had it for the last 18 years! It's one of the cleanest interiors on a truck of this age I've seen. It has next to no rust on it. PO said it blew out the block heater and needs a head gasket.
I spent about an hour getting it running today to confirm the head gasket. It had a dead battery, fuel fouled spark plugs, and a little bit of bad gas in the tank. Seems to be running strong on all four. So this weekend I'll pop the head off and replace the gasket and maybe slap a set of chains in there! All and all its a pretty clean truck and I'm real excited to have it join my family

Thanks guys! Yes Benno it is a 22re.
I was hoping I could get it running this weekend by just slapping a head gasket in it. As with every project I've ever done there were complications, of course!
This is how it started. Image I was pretty happy how clean the PO had kept the engine bay.
Then a couple hours later the head was off. Image it's silly how easy these toyotas are to work on!! When I had the head off and cleaned up I found it had about a .009" warp to the head. So I need to take it to a machine shop and have then deck it flat next week.
Poking around a bit I found this. Image one of the chain guides was completely gone and the chain wearing through the timing cover! So now I'm putting a chain set on it for sure. I also will pull the oil pan to check the oil pick up screen to make sure the chain guide isn't clogging that up. I've seen that kill way to many 1.8t turbos!
So looking back I should have just popped the motor out. I basically have just the block bolted to the trans in the truck. Hind sight right. I hope you guys don't mind a non euro thread

My first non euro

Well it lives to run another 200k! The head was really warped and they had to take .02" off to make it level. So I had to shim the head. Nothing to note about the timing chains other than having to replace the chain cover. I'm super glad I decided to pull the oil pan off. Image lots of nasty chain guides hanging out in there but on a good note they stayed in big enough parts that they didn't clog up the oil pump pick up screen.
I haven't put any miles on it yet. It was pretty late when I finished up and when I went to drive it home one of headlights stopped working and I didn't want to deal with it.
Side note, anyone want to buy a sweet topper? I'm not sure I want to keep it
