mk2vr6 swap

Post by SweaterVest » Sep Mon 19, 2011 10:18 pm

I picked up a 91 mk2 gti that i plan on doing a vr6 swap on hopefuly this winter. This will be my first bulid/swap or pretty much anything other than oem replacment parts.

A few weeks ago i found a 98 jetta glx on craigslist, that im going to use as a donner car. The car got hit in the front end and pretty much only took out the battery, washer fluid reservoire, and maybe bent the rad. suport a little bit. I tore it apart this weekend and got a few pictuers thought i would share. Now that i made a thread and maked it public i cant back out of this.

so this is just after i puller the pulled the front end. i had no idea it was this much more fun pulling appart a car that you dont have to worry about how it will look when your done!!!

just afert i lifted the body off the front end. felt like a such bad ass doing this( this bulid brought to you by mountain dew)

the heart of the beast

removed the rear bar(not really sure what to call this? but calling it a rear bar sounds better than the rear suspension thingy that the back wheels go on.)

dropped the gas tank with about four inches of dirt on top of it

decided i better pull this bad boy out

after like an hour

after using every bad word i know and a saw to cut a bigger hole in the fire wall i got it to this. O yeah by the way working under a dash with a six inch mohawk sucks!! it started so fresh and clean by the time i was done under the dash i looked like i had hair from those troll dolls. wish i had a pic of that

i made such a huge mess of the shop you could hardly walk around in there

so after about 20-25 hours i got to this point. it made for kind of a crazy weekend!!

so that my tear down of my donner car. i plan on driving my mk2 for a bit. i have to do some work on mk 97 git vr like the timing chains, wheel bearings, and a few other small things that will put it out for a while. so it might be a bit till i can update this.

You may find that the fuel lines from that will work better on your MK2

Not sure about the brake lines. I assume your are using the MK3 fuel tank for added capacity and a single pump? If so the fuel lines will be the right length and make a cleaner tank swap.

mk2vr6 swap

Post by SweaterVest » May Sat 23, 2015 10:57 pm

I guess it's about time for and update on this thread... IT IS FINALLY HAPPENING!! Only took me 5 years to start it. My mk2 has left me stranded twice in the past two weeks. Once I was just outside of butte and blew a tire. Benno saved the day and let me borrow one from him. Then the next weekend I broke an outer cv. So I had a three day weekend and lots of shop time so I decided it was time to start the swap!

How it started. Supper dirty!

In the shop with all the parts. Image
Pulled that beezy outta there!
Will be putting the VR6 subframe and suspension in tonight, then the rear suspension and fuel tank in the morning.

I like it. Can't wait to see it in August at the Euro show.

Lol I don't think it will quite be done by then.
So yesterday I got the fuel tank and rear suspension swapped. My goal for the weekend was to be able to role it in and out of the shop. Part one of this venture is compleat with minimal problems. It's starting to seem real now and I'm pretty excited for it!
I have a few things that I'm hoping you guys can help me with. Apparently the front crossmember from a mk3 does not fit so I need one out of a VR6 corrado or b3 Passat I believe.
I'm also in need of a transmission I seem to have misplaced mine... I was thinking a mk4 transmission would be kind of cool in there. So if you guys have any parts laying around that you think I might want I'm in the market
