Rattle when braking to stoplights

Post by kevin286 » Apr Sun 06, 2014 1:27 pm

Recently the TDI has been making a noticeable rattle when braking toward stoplights. Only notice when idling and when medium braking coasting up to stoplights. Only very rarely will it continue to rattle once stopped. It's a louder sound, not a light weight sound like would be from a heat shield or something along those lines.

Pulled the skid plate off and poked around. Found the flex coupler just after the bend out of the turbo and before the cat? for the exhaust looks bad. My theory is that under light braking the inertia pushes the motor forward a slight amount and the joint slightly separates there and vibrates causing the noise.

From VW this section is one big piece, not able to replace just the flex coupler. At almost 900 smackers I think I'd be inclined to take it to an exhaust shop and have them put in a new flex coupler.

What do you think of my theory, crack pipe or ?

I would be more concerned about motor mounts. You should check those also.

Copy that.
Kinda a pain to get to. Driver side looks ok. I don't see any tears and it feels all rubbery and such.

dog bone shape bottom center mount looks fine; both the rubber compression bit and the rubber circle bit.
what the heck is up with using 18 and 16 mm bolts. You're drunk vw, go home. :unibrow:
my sockets in these sizes are minty.
