Cold weather questions

Postby TDI in MT on Apr Tue 30, 2013 12:18 am

Being new to the diesel world, I have a few questions about cold weather operation. Better to ask (aks?) these questions now then when it's -20 outside.

Most likely, my Golf will be parked outside most of the time. Do I need to:

- get a "coldfront" to keep cold air out while driving?
- get a tank (coolant) heater? (three of my previous gas cars did have a block heater that was used occasionally)
- use #1 diesel? (If so, at what temperature?) Or is the #2 we get here adequately winterized at the refinery for days when it's -20?

My current gas van ('13 Ford E-150 cargo) doesn't have a block heater but it's usually parked in the garage. In the unlikely event I have to spend the night somewhere and it won't start in the morning, then it means I don't have to go to work!

Frost heater. It's a coolant heater/pump.
It's not how fast you go. It's how well you go fast.

Don't use #1. I have a Frost Heater in mine an like it a lot. http://www.frostheater.com/

-20 is nothing for a tdi. It will have no problem starting, it's just a matter of if you want heat right away, or 30 minutes later.

Your battery will give out before the fuel system.
