is this what the gage is telling you or have you felt the engine it might be for this problem a bad sending unit gage is messed up or broke wire unless you have a fail safe termast in wich when they fail they fail in the open position as to not over heat the engine

it was the gauge...due to coolant leak... found and fixed. everything is now fixed except for oil leak. its very small as I am not losing a noticeable amount of oil however *from a novice's perspective* it appears to be dripping on the header which makes for a nice plume of smoke.
