Yeah, I suppose in a B4 the needle would sit in the middle of the temp range which would be 220 or so like Roadhog said. If it's going higher than that then I would say there's an issue, otherwise normal.

Padro has a good link to a cooler running thermo - I am running that thermostat in my VR6.

More questions - have you ever done a coolant flush? Replaced the H20 pump ever? Running G12, green, or a mix of the two? Fans working? Any recent work on the cooling system where maybe there is still some air to be bled out?

Thats new too! It only does it if im really hard on it.
You might have a blown headgasket.

Could be, I've seen it before on other cars. But odds are that it's not. Symptoms are like a volcano of coolant usually - as soon as you open the cap a gallon of coolant billows out. Sometimes oil mixes in with the coolant and it looks brown and muddy.

Usually it's Occam's razor with this symptom - air in the system that needs to be bled out. Or maybe a reversed thermostat.

VRs run kinda hot. Maybe nothing, so check everything :) If everything checks out, you could try some redline water wetter. I have only used it at the track but, it worked well :thumbsup:

You can't reverse the thermostat on a vr6. I did have the same exact symptoms he explains when my headgasket was bad. It would blow some coolant out of the expansion tank if you ran it hard. New cap, tank, still did it. Stuck an emissions tester in the expansion tank with the car running and it gave me a high hydrocarbon reading so I knew it was definitely a headgasket. The fiber gaskets in older vr6's are known for their high failure rate. :p

When you are talking about temps is it the analog water guage or the temp displayed in the digital "MFA" readout?

MFA should be oil temp and 230 on a hot day is not uncommon. Good question.
